Our History
E.M. Blackburn, Sr. came to Amarillo in 1918 at the invitation of his two brothers Walter and Jeff who had established a store in Amarillo in 1908. In 1918 E.M. Blackburn purchased the Eakle Funeral Home, and in 1919 opened Blackburn’s Funeral Directors on S. Polk St. (The building sat where IH-40 intersects S. Polk street today). As the business grew Mr. Blackburn relocated to the corner of 5th and Pierce and the funeral business built Amarillo’s first funeral chapel in 1941. Mr. Blackburn turned the business over to his two sons Percy and E.M. Blackburn, Jr. and the business became known as Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors. E.M., Jr. was involved in many civic organizations in Amarillo. As the business grew a second location was built on Martin Road to better serve the northern portion of Amarillo. Today our three locations: Blackburn-Shaw Martin Road Chapel, Blackburn-Shaw Coulter Road Chapel and Memory Gardens Cemetery, along with Amarillo’s only local crematory continue the time honored tradition of service that we are recognized for.
Since 1919 Blackburn-Shaw Funeral Directors has served the Amarillo and Panhandle area with understanding, dignity, and compassion. That commitment to unparalleled service that has been our cornerstone continues in every aspect of our service to your family and community. That reputation and commitment continues today, even though Mr. Blackburn passed away in 2006. This dedication to service comes from our knowledge that funeral services are for the living. Because funerals are so very important, we strive to make every service a truly special and meaningful event.
We are proud to be the only funeral home in Amarillo to own and operate our own local crematory.
Yesterday…Today….and Tomorrow
We have been a part of the fabric of Amarillo, and recognize the privilege it is to serve generations of Amarillo families.
