Diane Barber Underhill

June 16, 1938 ~ July 26, 2014 (age 76) 76 Years Old
Diane Barber Underhill died on July 26, 2014 at The Ohio State University’s Ross Heart Hospital. She was 76 years old. Diane was born June 16, 1938 in Canton, Ohio and was the youngest daughter of L. Dwight and H. Marcile Bachellor. She grew up working in her father’s pharmacy as well as spending summers with her cousins at their grandparents’ home in Payne, Ohio. Diane, like her mother, was destined to go onto college and in the fall of 1956 she enrolled in Westminster College in Pennsylvania. After her freshman year, she transferred to Mount Union College in Alliance, Ohio where she met her husband to be, Bob. Diane graduated in 1960 with a degree in elementary education, moved to Columbus and became an elementary school teacher at Pinecrest Elementary in the Columbus, School System. Shortly thereafter, she and Bob were married and began their life together in Reynoldsburg. They were blessed with three sons who were their pride and joy: Rob, Charles and David. Diane left teaching to raise her three boys and soon found their home and yard too small for three very active boys. They decided to move and purchased five acres on a hill overlooking a small valley just outside of Lithopolis in Fairfield County. This became their home and refuge for the next 41 years and provided the perfect place for their boys’ boundless energy and imagination. Diane returned to teaching once the boys were in school and taught 4th grade at both Bloom and Carroll Elementary Schools for another 16 years before she retired. She was an active member of the Lithopolis United Methodist Church and enjoyed the Thursday morning ladies bible study as well as breakfast with friends after church. The joy she found in her sons was multiplied as they found life partners, Rochelle (Rob), David (Charlie) and Howard (David) whom she adopted as her own. Life was really good and became better as she was blessed with two grandchildren, Katie and Noah who became the apples of her eye. Diane is preceded in death by her parents, L. Dwight and H. Marcile Bachellor and sister Shirley and is survived by her husband Bob, sons Rob (Rochelle), Charlie (David) and David (Howard), grandchildren Katie and Noah, sister Beverly (Walter) Schwabe, sister-in-law Margra (Marsh) Grillo and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will have visiting hours at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 Waterloo Street, Canal Winchester, Ohio 43110 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Tuesday July 29, 2014.
