Mom and Diane
Preach the Gospel always, if necessary use words. This counsel by St. Francis truly describes how Mom and Dad lived their lives together. And two shall become one.
They were by no means biblical scholars in the academic sense but they did approach life through the lens of their Catholic faith. United, they believed and trusted in God’s formula for life and happiness. They understood that true love is sacrificial and each loved not for themselves but for the benefit of the other and their family. Their plan was simple, trust in God always, love your family, work hard and give everyone the best version of yourself…you won’t go wrong. Probably without knowing it, they preached the Gospel mess through this example. They may not have been materially rich but they gave their family unlimited live and security, just what we really needed. It must have been working because God graced their marriage for 68 years.
Mom, although you may not have realized it, you placed a perfect exclamation on a long life. In the past several years you struggled daily always wondering what good you could be possibly doing and why you were here. But as with the rest of your life you stayed the course. You suffered with dignity, faith and prayer, your greatest example yet of a good life. With Jesus calling you at 3 pm, the hour of Divine Mercy, I think He agrees.
Diane, having been a witness to this, applied these lessons in many ways. In her career with the Dept. of Navy Finance, she was a government worker who actually cared and got results. Her specialty was untangling bureaucratic problems for the benefit of the vets. For this she earned numerous citations and awards. Diane also had an uncanny nature for tenderness and kindness. She expressed this largely through her immense crafting skills. Whether it was hand knitting baby blankets, calligraphy, cross stitching, making ornaments, jewelry or rosaries. She was constantly treating her family and friends with these gifts throughout the years. Her greatest joy though was sharing herself with her only nephew, Anthony. Nothing put a smile on her face like spending time with him. Diane you brought a tremendous amount of color and sparkle to our lives.
Mom, you can truly hold your place as part of the greatest generation. Diane, although your mobility was limited, you had a great and positive impact on so many people. We pray and trust that the ocean of God’s mercy has washed away your pain and suffering and that you are both home. We love you and will miss you every single day. But as long as we have memories, we will never say good-bye.
