Robert Stewart Wood, age 89, passed away the 4th of August, 2017 in his hometown at Altercare of Canal Winchester. Born May 15, 1928 in Cadmus, Ohio to the late Homer E. and Aldelth E. Wood, he graduated from Cadmus High School the Class of 1944.
During Bob’s life he attended Faith United, Mt. Olive, and Oxford United Methodist Churches as he traveled the country. He served in the United States Marines from July of 1945 until August of 1949. On his return from the service, he started his career with “Bob Evans” working at the truck terminal in Gallipolis and ultimately was the COO of the company’s restaurant business and Executive Vice President and Vice Chairman. He retired from Bob Evans in 1992 and from the board in 1997.
During Bob’s career he was the 1991 IFMA Silver Plate winner, served as a board member of the National Restaurant Association in government affairs, received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Ohio Restaurant Association, and was inducted into the Ohio Restaurant Hall of Fame. Bob served on the Board of Trustees and Finance Committee of the Methodist Theological Seminary from 1980 until 1992, served as the president of Rio Grande College Board of Trustees, was a trustee for over 20 years, and received an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Rio Grande College.
Not one to ignore his hometown, Bob served on the Canal Winchester Board of Education and was an active member of the Canal Winchester Historical Society where recently he helped support the reconstruction of the National Barber Museum and Hall of Fame. In addition to providing support for the local Food Pantry and Canal Winchester Human Services, he has been a major supporter of Nationwide Children’s Hospital, Grant Medical Center and the Homeless Families Foundation. Bob was a member of the Free Masons for over 65 years.
Bob was preceded in death by his wife Peggy L. Wood; sisters, Ruth Carter, Dorothy Aspel, Linda White; brother, Tom White; and grandchildren, Melissa and Malinda Mathias. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Carol Wood; children, Kitty (Victor) Argobright, Cheryl Wood Mathias, Vicki Wood, and Robert S. Wood II (Raegene), and step-children Mark Williams (Kathy), and Shannon Del Vecchio; twelve grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
A public memorial service will be held Saturday August 12th, 2017, at 10:00 am, at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home & Crematory, 650 W. Waterloo St. Canal Winchester, OH 43110 with the Rev. Dr. Norman Dewire officiating. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Canal Winchester Area Historical Society, PO Box 15, Canal Winchester, OH 43110.
