Brian Maass, age 76, of Pataskala, passed away peacefully on May 12, 2020 at Mount Carmel East Hospital surrounded by loved ones after battling dementia. Born May 1, 1944 in Evansville, Indiana to the late Gustav and Patricia (Hendrickson) Maass, he grew up mostly in Excelsior, Minnesota before graduating from Lehigh University. Brian served as a proud Army officer for 28 years, including completing two tours in the Vietnam War, and retired as a Colonel. After his military career, he worked as a consultant with Accenture.
Brian is survived by his wife Karen Kugel Maass of 42 years; sons Matthew of Detroit, Michigan and Jeffrey (Lindsey) of Pataskala, Ohio; granddaughter Madi of Pataskala, Ohio; sister Nancy (Ted) Wiedemann of Tucson, Arizona; brothers-in-law Richard (Nancy) Kugel of Glendale, Wisconsin and John Kugel (Roberta, previously deceased) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister-in-law Patricia Kugel of Acworth, Georgia; many nieces, nephews and friends.
Brian was an avid sailor with a strong interest in cars, sports car and Formula 1 racing and astronomy. He also enjoyed working with computers and audio equipment and loved spending time with his family.
Due to current restrictions, the family will have a private service at Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home in Pickerington and plans to have a larger celebration of Brian’s life with family and friends later in 2020 - details to come from the family.
