Hazel M. (Bliss) Childers, age 84, of Canal Winchester, died Friday, Nov. 23, 2018, at Amber Park Assisted Living. She was born Oct. 9, 1934, in Beaver, Ohio, to the late Donald and Mildred (McCain) Bliss. Hazel was the second of eight children. As the eldest girl in the family, she helped her mother take care of the little ones. She married Harold Childers on Dec. 19, 1951, before he shipped overseas with the U.S. Marine Corps. She was an exceptionally sharp student and was named salutatorian of Stockdale High School’s class of 1953. During their early years of marriage, the couple lived in Minnesota, Michigan, Indiana, North Carolina and Southern Ohio, before settling in Canal Winchester. Hazel had a head for numbers and held various positions in accounting. She retired from a U.S. Government payroll office. She enjoyed traveling, collecting antique glass, working crossword puzzles and word searches, watching baseball, reading, and doting on her dogs. Before moving to Amber Park, she was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Canal Winchester. She is preceded in death by her husband, Harold Childers; her daughter, Patricia Hanlin; and one sister and two brothers. Hazel is survived by her children Harold S. Childers (Canal Winchester) and Connie Beane (Gold Canyon, Ariz.), as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110. A funeral service will be held there at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Pastor Wayne Stuntz, followed by interment at Lithopolis Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
