Joseph David Newland

Joseph Newland, age 80, of Canal Winchester, passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2018 at Mount Carmel East Hospital. He was born May 14, 1937 in Bedford, IN to the late William and Myra Newland. Joseph proudly served his country for 6 years as a member of the Army National Guard and then for the US Army Reserves. He worked as a Personal Trainer at the Groveport Rec. Center for 15 years. Joseph had a passion for health and wellness; was an avid cyclist and liked to hike. He loved to travel, enjoyed a good glass of wine, and cherished time spent with his friends and family. Preceded in death by his son, David A. Newland; brother, Robert D. Newland. Joseph is survived by his son, Derek (Christen Fox) Newland; granddaughters, Elizabeth (David) Gawel, Rebekah Newland; great-granddaughter, Lily Gawel. Family and friends may visit 4-7:00 pm on Friday, February 16 for a very casual Celebration of Life at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110 where a funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, February 17 at 10:00 am at Betzer Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph’s memory can be made to Pelotonia, 351 W. Nationwide Blvd. Columbus, OH 43215, or to the American Cancer Society, 5555 Frantz Rd, Dublin, OH 43017.
