Melvin “Red” Merle, age 89, of Pickerington, died Thursday, June 23, 2022. Born January 19, 1933 in Columbus to the late Charles & Minnie (Dunlop) Merle. He was a 1950 graduate of Pickerington High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was co-owner of Merle Brothers Excavating and was a member of Pickerington American Legion Post 283.
Red was an avid OSU Buckeye fan and season ticket holder for many years. He also played in multiple golf leagues, and loved entertaining family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Sally Merle; step-children, Robin (Don) Driver, Scott Gray; grandchildren, Cass (Valene) Driver, Corbin Driver, Cole (Ashley Buckler) Driver, Logan (Erika Null) Gray, Dillon Gray; great-grandchildren, Reid, Rhett, and Lola Driver, Luke and Ben Gray; and brother, Doug (Betty Jo) Merle.
Friends may visit 2-4 pm Sunday, June 26 at the Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home, 550 Hill Rd N (St. Rt. #256), Pickerington. Graveside service with military honors will be 10 am Monday at Violet Cemetery in Pickerington with Pastor Brad Gee officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends may contribute to the American Cancer Society (https://donate3.cancer.org) or American Legion Post 283 in Red’s memory.
