Roger Slay Middaugh, age 74, of Wellford, SC, formerly of Lancaster, died Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at the Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. Born August 24, 1943, in Columbus, OH to the late Royden and Betty (Hilyard) Middaugh. He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Janice Miley; and 1 sister. A 1962 graduate of Eastmoor High School, Roger married the love of his life and best friend, Carol, shortly after graduation and they have created many memories since. He was a member at Christ Lutheran Church in Bexley and St. John Lutheran Church in Lithopolis. Roger retired as a leakage inspector after 35 years with Columbia Gas. Roger and Carol, both retired for 19 years, spent many hours volunteering together, for many different organizations, L.S.S. Food Pantries, Meals on Wheels, Wagnalls Memorial Library and Habitat for Humanity. They also loved to travel and took many trips together. Roger coached football at all different levels, from his grandson, Ryan’s youth league team to semi-pro. He also coached his granddaughter, Jessica’s softball team and played church league softball for many years. He was an avid fan of the Cleveland Browns and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Roger was particularly honored to be asked by his grandson, Ryan to become ordained to officiate his and Laura’s wedding. An outgoing and ornery personality, with an approachable face and demeanor; Roger never met anyone he could not win over as a friend and loved time spent with his family and friends more than anything. He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Carol Middaugh; daughters, Wendy (Steven Cole) Listebarger, Kelly (Sam) Patino; grandchildren, Ryan (Laura) Listebarger, Jessica (Shawn) Kohler, Logan and McCoy Patino; great-grandchildren, Connor, Jayden Slay and Chase Kohler; 1 brother; 3 sisters; and many extended family. Family and friends may visit 11-1:00 pm on Monday, August 27, at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester, OH 43110, where a funeral service, officiated by Pastor Joe Wolf, will follow at 1:00 pm. Interment Lithopolis Cemetery. In Roger’s memory, donations in his name can be made to The Wagnalls Memorial Library, 150 E Columbus St, Lithopolis, OH 43136.
