Shawn Sundance Leckey, 47, of Pataskala, died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 7, 2019. Born on July 1, 1972, Shawn was member of the Rosebud Sioux Tribe in Rosebud, South Dakota. He was a Sicangu Lakota, part of the Oceti Sakowin. He attended elementary and grade school in Mission, SD and moved to Pierre, SD, where he attended high school and later attended JOB CORP in Nemo, SD. Shawn proudly served in the Marine Corps and was a member of the HMLA-269 Squadron. He was a 2006 graduate of Penn State University and was a member of the Penn State Paintball Team. Shawn worked as an IT Specialist for DFAS. He was a member of JADE Precision, LLC Competitive Precision Shooting Team. He was also a member of the All Modern Mopars of Ohio club and loved showing off his beloved Dodge Challenger, “El”. Shawn will be remembered as a man that could do anything if he really wanted to. He was a devoted family man and loved being a husband and father. He touched so many lives and will be missed by all who knew him. Shawn is survived by his wife, Jeanette Marie Groll-Leckey; sons, Gavin Randall Leckey and Merrick James Leckey; parents, MaryAnn Bear Heels and Gene McCowan and Ernest White Eagle/Tayle; siblings, Melanie (Chet) Stoneman, Edward Budnek, Latrell Tayle, Jr., Terrell Tayle, Randy Tayle, Loren Tayle, Ruby Tayle, Raelene Bianas, Erlene Tayle, Aleron White Eagle, and Rachel Bissonette; step-brothers, Dave McCowan and Tyler McCowan; mother and father-in-law, Anita and James Groll; brothers-in-law, Eric (Jeanie) Groll, Allan Groll, and Kevin (Jessie) Groll; nieces and nephews, Katlin Zotti, Miranda Perkins, Topi Perkins, Laycie Williams, Wakinyan Williams, Antoinette Antonio, Jordan Budnek, and Evangeline Budnek; great-nieces and nephews, Taya Zotti, Mark Zotti-Leslie, Daxton Gerald Iron Shooter, Leroy White Bear, Evaleena Williams, Thomas Plenty Chief III, Sincere Stoneman, and Wigmuke Stoneman; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. Shawn was preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Evelyn Nancy Cordier, Christine Two Lance-Fire Place, and Dallas Fire Place; grandparents, Spencer and Grace Bear Heels, Angeline Fire Place, and Cleveland Tayle; and his step-brother, Mark McCowan. Traditional services will be held at Sinte Gleska University Wakinyan Wanbli Multi-Purpose Building, Mission, SD, on Friday, July 19, 2019. Shawn’s arrival and tribute will be at 10:00 a.m. Traditional prayers will take place from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Roll Call by the Sicangu Warriors Veterans, Jim Herman. Military Night Watch by Patrick Stiffler and Jeff Fox. Drum Group by HeHaka Cinkla and Emerson Little Elk. Final Tribute will be held from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 20, 2019. Final Interment will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2019 at St. Thomas Cemetery, Mission, SD. Gene McCowan and Chester Stoneman will be officiating. Pallbearers will be: Michael Beardt, Ernest Blacksmith, Jr., Jamie Templeton, Edward Farmer, Jr., John “Toby” McDaniels, Paul David Bordeau, Everett Felix, Jr., Tent Poignee, Carl Peneaux, Patrick Redfish, Bryan Szabo, and Mekasi Horinek. Honorary pallbearers will be: JADE Precision’s, Eugene Swift Hawk, Ben Alicea, Chris Lewellen, Adam Bently, and Doug Dearing, all HMLA-269 Squadron, U.S. Marine Corps and Precision Shooting Team Members.
