Susan Elaine (McLafferty) Furlong passed away June 27, 2022 at home after a four-month battle with T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia (T-PLL). Born May 3, 1955 in Butler, PA to the late Regis and Esther (Smail) McLafferty. Sue was a Registered Nurse, graduating from St. Elizabeth School of Nursing in Youngstown, OH in 1976; latter receiving a BS degree from St. Joseph’s College, Standish, ME. Sue was employed at Marion General Hospital from 1976 thru 1998. When the family moved to Columbus in late 1998 Sue began working at Mount Carmel East. She retired from Mount Carmel in 2020. Sue enjoyed and found the beauty in planting things, and never found a garden center she didn’t love. In 2021, bored with retirement Sue found her “fun” job at Straders Garden Center in Reynoldsburg. Her other hobbies included sewing, quilt making, reading novels, watching any and all home improvement shows and watching the wildlife in her back yard. Sue was a big fan of Jr. Drum and Bugle Corps competitions. While growing up Sue marched with the Catholic Daughters of America. In August 1971 at the US Open in Marion, OH Sue would meet the love of her life when the all-girl drum corps got in a water battle with the high school football team. Six years later, to the day, Sue married her best friend, one of those football players and became Mrs. Ken Furlong. This started a wonderful journey for Ken and Sue who were blessed with 45 years together. Together Ken and Sue enjoyed Michigan Wolverine football games, Butler Bulldog basketball games, and biking, long walks in the park, kayaking, and vacationing in the upper portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. Sue is survived by her husband, the pride and absolute joy of her life daughter Kirstin (Chris) Berkeybile, and her grand puppy Lucy. Also surviving are sisters, Cheryl McLafferty-Grey, Patricia Moore; brother, Terrence McLafferty, and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute or Mount Carmel Hospice. Friends and family may visit Dwayne R. Spence Funeral Home 550 Hill Rd, N, Pickerington, OH 43147 from 4-7pm on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
