Verna R. & Cordell Sterling Williams

Tribute

Verna R. Williams and Cordell Sterling Williams were married 52 years. They met and married in Columbus, OH. 

Verna was employed by the State of Ohio and worked for the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio for 50 years.    Verna had a special place in her heart for coworkers Robbin, Joe, Sam, Chuck, Mary Alice, Greta, Marchia and Shahid. When Verna wasn’t working, she was usually reading the Columbus Dispatch.

Sterling served in the United States Army.  He was a decorated Vietnam Veteran, a recipient of the National Defense Service medal, Vietnam Campaign medal and Vietnam Service medal. During his time in the military, he enjoyed traveling around Vietnam, Thailand and various parts of Asia.  Sterling could speak Thai. Sterling served alongside one of his best friends, Johnny Porter.

Sterling was previously employed at York International Heating and Cooling and was a member of the Plumbers and PipeFitters Union.  Sterling loved traveling, cherry cordial ice cream, coffee and a good debate.

Verna and Sterling were members of World Harvest Church for over 30 years.  They served as Deacons, Lay Leaders and loved cooking with Metro Harvest. Verna had a passion for children’s ministry and you could often find her at the Kid Harvest registration table.

In their free time, you could usually find Verna or Sterling spending time with their children or grandchildren. They also enjoyed spending time with The Bussey Family, Terry and Theresa Smith and Family, The Palmore Family, The Bright Family, The Reese Family, and friends Chip Willis, Rosemary Gore-Packer, Kay Williams and Janet Johnson.

Verna and Sterling loved each other, loved their family, loved their church, and believed in & valued hard work. Verna and Sterling were an encouragement to all who knew them.  Verna went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, September 16 and Cordell joined her less than 24 hours later on Thursday, September 17.

Verna and Sterling will be deeply missed by their surviving siblings Julia (Stan) Gill and Gloria Payne and their children Charisse Penn, Noe (Brondon) Mathis; grandchildren; Charae Williams Keys, Shekinah (Marcus) Goins, Israeli Mathis, Imanuel Mathis, Aharon Mathis and Hannah-Aliyah Mathis.  Verna and Sterling loved their nephews, nieces, God children, and Gilbert Turnage.

Verna and Sterling are proceeded in death by their parents; Lula Belle Cooper, Charles Cudgel, Vernon & Carrie Belle Williams, siblings; Jackie Higginbotham, Roderick Williams, Robert Cooper, David Emanuel Cooper, Charlene Newlin; nephew Paul Ricardo Newlin and their grandson in-law, Jason Keys. 

Celebrate Verna and Sterling’s life together with their family at World Harvest Church on Thursday, September 30 at 5 PM.  Enter at the North Door.  Private burial for close friends and family will be on Friday, October 1, 2021 at Glen Rest Memorial Estates.
