William Layton "Billy" Smith IV

March 17, 2020 ~ March 23, 2020

Tribute

William Layton “Billy” Smith IV died March 23, 2020 at home surrounded by his family. He was born March 17, 2020 at Mount Carmel East to his loving parents, William “Bill” and Tiffany (Dulmage) Smith III.

Despite a terminal diagnosis, Billy’s strength and desire to live enabled him to spend 6 days with his family. He was expected to pass shortly after birth. Instead, he defied expectations, bringing great joy to his family in a wonderful day of celebration. Billy spent the next 3 days with his parents and the lovely support staff of Labor and Delivery of Mt. Carmel East. He grabbed his parents’ fingers with his strong right hand, he looked at them lovingly with his eyes, he bonded with them. He enjoyed music, being read to, hearing about his namesake, making joyful noises, and interacting with family through Facetime.

Billy’s continued strength enabled him to go home, where he spent the last couple days surrounded by family and the kind hospice nurses of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. He bonded with loved ones, slept in his own new bassinet, and passed peacefully in his father’s arms on Monday morning.

Billy is survived by his grandparents, John and Karen (Waibel) Dulmage, and William “Bill” and Debbie Smith Jr; aunts and uncles, David Smith, Steve Smith, John and Nicole (Dulmage) Nightingale, and Andrew and Brittany (O’Neill) Dulmage; and cousins, Jason, Evan, and Molly Nightingale, and Evelyn Dulmage.

Due to current limitations of the Covid-19 Virus, a small memorial service for limited family only will be held at the Chapel on Saturday, April 4th, at 11:00am. Video conferencing is available for those not able to attend and can be viewed at

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Sufficient Grace Ministries, a Non-Profit Organization whose members provided care and support for Billy’s parents throughout his journey.
