William W. "Bill" Merchant
August 28, 1929 ~ May 24, 2021 (age 91) 91 Years Old
William W. “Bill” Merchant, age 91, of Alexandria and Columbus, died Monday, May 24, 2021 at his residence. Born during the great depression to Homer & Thelma Merchant, Bill grew up on Columbus' east side with his five siblings: Helen, Elinor, Harry, Jerry, and Jeanne. After graduating from Columbus East, he joined the Army and trained soldiers in artillery at Ft. Lewis during the Korean conflict. After the war, he returned to Columbus where he studied engineering, earning certification as both a civil engineer and surveyor. He enjoyed success as a professional engineer, eventually co-founding the firm Bauer, Borowitz, & Merchant. In 1966, Bill married Miriam "Mim" Snider (d 2017). The pair settled in Reynoldsburg and raised two sons, Mark A. (wife, Debra) and Craig E. Merchant. After retirement Bill and Mim moved to a log house of his own design where they entertained their three grandchildren: Joseph, Emma, and OBob. Bill will be greatly missed by both friends and family. Viewing hours are 4-7 pm Thursday May 27 at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 550 Hill Rd N., Pickerington. A short memorial service will be held in the same location at 10:30am on Friday. Private interment will take place later at Betzer Cemetery. The family respectfully asks mourners to wear masks. A livestream of the service will be available at the link which will be posted below. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to the Nationwide Children's Hospital.
