William E. Sloan, DDS

Dr. William “Bill” Ernest Sloan, of Dublin, OH left this world peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2021, surrounded by family. Born May 19, 1938, in Carrollton, Ohio, to Ernest Vincent Sloan and Helen Wurm Sloan, he is preceded in death by his parents, his sister Roberta Ward, brother-in-law Lawrence Ward, mother-in-law Nelda Miller, father-in-law Harold Miller and his beloved Boston Terrier, Loki. Bill is survived by his wife of 35 years, Ila Miller Sloan, his three children and their spouses Tracy Sloan Sweeney and Jim Sweeney, Todd Sloan and Michelle Schmitz Sloan, Jason Cover and Emily Perrotta, his four grandchildren James Sweeney, Clare Sweeney, Jackson Sloan, Maxwell Sloan and his two nieces and their spouses Tammy Ward Mauner and Bruce Mauner, Tanya Ward Dombrowski and Joe Dombrowski, his three grandnieces and grandnephew Chelsea Groshans, Aaron Mauner, Katie Marie Bentley and Megan Dombrowski and his constant companion dog, Pandora.

A lifelong Buckeye, he was a graduate of The Ohio State University and an active member of Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He remained a loyal fan and attended Football games in the ‘Shoe as a Presidents Club ticket holder until he could no longer climb the stadium stairs in 2020. Bill received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from The Ohio State Dental School in June 1963 and went into private practice later that year in what was at the time the small town of Dublin just north of Columbus. He stayed active in his Dental School Fraternity, Psi Omega, bringing his fellow alumni together at many annual events including as chairman of their 50th Class Reunion in 2013. “Doc” Sloan went on to serve the Ohio Dental Association in several leadership roles including President, representing Ohio in several American Dental Association research and legislative initiatives. He proudly practiced dentistry at the same Dublin office for forty years until he retired in 2003.

An avid sportsman throughout his life, Bill enjoyed all manner of athletic pursuits from golf to racquetball to white water rafting and everything in between. He learned to fish and hunt from his father while a teen in northern Ohio and never put down his rod. His time sport fishing on the water in the Florida Keys with friends and family were some of his most precious memories. He was star offensive end of his Carrollton High School team, Class of ’56, and played competitive baseball from childhood until finally hanging up his pitcher’s glove as an adult to coach his children in Little League eventually serving the community as the Dublin Little League President supporting youth athletics in the town he loved. Bill’s love for golf became a central pillar in the life and home he built in Dublin. As a founding member at Muirfield Village Golf Club, a Club Captain and longtime Chairman of Registration for the Memorial Tournament, Muirfield Village was an incredibly special and important part of his life. It was his second home and a source of lifelong friendships including his dear “Geezers”. How he loved the game of golf – it gave him endless joy to watch his son and grandson share his pastime and join him in a round.

As much as Bill enjoyed relaxing in the beautiful home and gardens he shared with Ila, a passion for travel motivated him to see the world. From early fishing trips along the Canadian French River to watching the picturesque shoreline of the Danube gently roll by, Bill was blessed with countless adventures. Golfing in Ireland and Scotland, absorbing history, music, food and wine in Italy, France, Austria, and the Czech Republic, and exploring beautiful coastlines of Mexico, Florida, North Carolina and California – all amazing trips he enjoyed with his close friends, beloved wife and family. In his later life, the sandy beaches of Marco Island became his cherished escape from Ohio’s winters where he devoured scores of books and combed the surf in search of shells. Bill was truly home wherever he was and made memories along the way that buoyed him as the years passed.

Bill lived his life to the fullest and touched thousands of people along the way. He was a fighter, a 20+ year survivor of cancer and larger than life character who loved to be with and interact with anyone he met. As a jokester, storyteller, family man, and person of great compassion, he will be sorely missed by all. Honoring his wish, a celebration of life will be held in the coming months with details to be shared soon.
