Frances S. Steube, age 91 of Canal Winchester, passed away April 11, 2014 at Mt. Carmel East Hospital
Frances was born August 6, 1922, in Groveport, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy; parents Ralph and Ruth Stir; her siblings Burdell (George) Coon, Margaret (Jim) White, Clara (Harvey) Spence, and Ralph Stir Jr.
Survivors include her son, Philip, daughter-in-law, Jennifer, grandchildren, Tyler, Curtis and Angela, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Frances graduated from The The Ohio State University with Bachelor of Science and Master’s Degrees In education. She was a proud veteran of WWII, U.S. Marine Corp and was a m ember of DAR.
She was a retired high school teacher having taught for 32 years in Mechanicsburg, Canal Winchester and Groveport Schools. Frances was an active member of David Lutheran Church. She served on Canal Winchester Village Council for over 20 years, being the first woman elected to council.
Responsible for the building of the Frances Steube Senior/Community Center and Co-founder of the Canal Winchester Historical Society. She Co- authored Canal Winchester- The Second Ninety Years and In Celebration of 150 Years in Canal Winchester, and served on CW Landmarks committee. She was instrumental in getting numerous places on the Historical Register (former CW High school, Chaney Mill, covered bridges)
Friends may visit Tuesday from 2-4 & 6-8 PM at The DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME 650 West Waterloo Street Canal Winchester, Ohio. Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at David Lutheran Church 300 Groveport Pike Canal Winchester, Ohio with pastors Beth and Davis Westphal officiating, Interment with military honors will follow at Carroll Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to The Steube Scholar Fund, C/O David Lutheran Church in her memory.
