Richard L. "Dick" Hummel

Richard L. “Dick” Hummel, age 91, of Canal Winchester, died Saturday, February 25, 2017 at Grant Medical Center. Born March 5, 1925 in Columbus to the late Ernest R. & Alma Mae (Bachman) Hummel, he was a 1943 graduate of Canal Winchester High School and received his Bachelors and Masters degrees from The Ohio State University after serving in the U.S. Army during WWII.
He was a former Vo-Ag teacher at Spencerville High School, served as president of the Ohio Vo-Ag Teachers Association, and was a former executive secretary for both the Ohio Young Farmers Association and the National Young Farmers Association. He retired as Supervisor of Ag Teachers at the State Department of Education. He was also a member of David Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was a former Sunday School teacher, and served on the board of directors of Canal Winchester Human Services.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Joyce Hummel; children, Dennis (Lynne) Hummel, Chesterfield, MO, Mary (Thomas) DeVault, Troy, OH, Kathy (Steve) Hinton, Canal Winchester, James (Jill) Hummel, Canal Winchester, David (Suzy) Hummel, Mason, OH; 17 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; brother, Thomas (Sara) Hummel, Canal Winchester; nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by brother, Jerry Hummel; and grandson, Andrew Hummel.
Friends may visit 2-4 & 6-8 pm Friday at the DWAYNE R. SPENCE FUNERAL HOME, 650 W. Waterloo St., Canal Winchester. Funeral service will be held 10:30 am Saturday at David Evangelical Lutheran Church, 300 Groveport Pike, Canal Winchester, OH 43110. Interment after at Union Grove Cemetery.
